PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an enthralling multiplayer battle royale for Windows 10 and Xbox.

However, some players have stated on forums that Battlegrounds doesn’t start for them after a recent update. Here’s a message from a player stating the error:

I had a major Windows update and now my PUBG won’t start. I have verified files on Steam and restarted endless times, but can seem to figure it out.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds doesn’t launch, yet this error isn’t accompanied by a pop-up message window that provides further clues.

If you find yourself in a situation where the file failed to validate and will be reacquired on Steam, you may need to check these troubleshooting steps to fix it.

If Steam doesn’t launch PUBG for no particular reason whatsoever, these are a few resolutions that might get the game started.

What can I do if PUBG won’t launch after an update?

1. Check your antivirus

Verify your antivirus software. If you experience behavior like this after an update, this is usually the first thing you should do.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the update had a string of code that resembled a virus, resulting in a false positive and quarantining it by your antivirus. If this is the case, make an exception in the settings of your antivirus.

For what it’s worth, ESET Internet Security does include a whitelisting option as part of their gaming and performance support. This is helpful because it allows you to submit your game to reduce the possibility of false positives.

This option is meant to be used as a preventive step for trusted and undiscovered applications in order to reduce the chance of future false positives.

The whitelisting utility is not a conduit for deleting current detections, resolving disputes, or resolving any unrelated issues, but to be clear, PUBG is not harmful to your computer.

Click Change adapter settings to open network connections.

Some PUBG players could not connect to the game’s server after recent updates so we can try with Google’s DNS.

As such, Battlegrounds not starting can also be due to an outdated DNS directory if not the issue with the server. You can check the server status of PUBG, as the servers might be too busy.

7. Roll Back Windows 10 if PUBG won’t launch after an update

If you can select a Choose a different restore point option, select that option and click Next.

Select Show more restore points to fully expand your choice of restore points.

Press the Scan for affected programs button to open a window that lists programs and software updates that get removed for a system restore point.

As PUBG doesn’t start for some Steam users after a recent update, rolling Windows 10 back to a system restore point might also fix the issue. System Restore undoes software updates after a selected restore point.

You can select to restore Windows 10 to a restore point that predates a few PUBG updates. So you can restore Windows to a time when Battlegrounds ran just fine.
